Greg Raymer Wins the Big One
Congratulations to Greg "Fossilman" Raymer, who won the World Championship event at the World Series of Poker this evening, outlasting 2,575 other entrants in a seven-day poker marathon, and winning a record-breaking $5,000,000 prize.
This makes the second world champion whom I have known at least casually before his win. Chris Ferguson used to play on the old IRC poker server; and Greg has been an ongoing contributor to the Usenet newsgroup rec.gambling.poker and to the discussion forums on Two Plus Two. No dark horse, his reputation as a no-limit hold'em tournament player has been developing over the years.
Way to go, Greg!
Posted by abostick at May 28, 2004 09:40 PMI just wanted to publicly comment on how cheap the 3 final contestants were. 2nd and 3rd place of the WSOP final event failed to tip the dealers and directors of the event. 1st place winning over 5 million dollars tipped less than $100,000, I did not get the exact amount. I myself watched day in and day out how much the staff works to put on the WSOP. They didn't have any days off since the 1st day, not to mention that they all worked over 14 hours a day. Some of the dealers told me that they didn't sleep for days on end. The dedication and stress the staff endured during those weeks were unforgettable, and for it not to be recognized and toked is unexcepptable. I hope the winners shove that money up their butts, b/c frankly they should be ashamed of themselves!
Posted by: WSOP Wife at May 29, 2004 11:20 PMThis wouldn't happen to have anything to do with the fact that 2% of the total prize pool, or $495,000, had already been taken out of the prize pool as a tip for the dealers and tournament staff, would it?
Posted by: Alan Bostick at May 30, 2004 07:09 AMMy gawd! They had taken out tips from the prize pool already! It was part of the entry fee!
I would think the dealers would be ecstatic over receiving an additional 100k from ONE player, in the MAIN event, when the other near 2600 players had given 2% of their buy-in to the dealers, in advance, win or lose.
What greed! I saw players tipping dealers extensively throughout the entire series. I even asked the satellite director if the dealers were given tips out of our sat juice, he responded that they were, and we were STILL tipping the dealers when we won sats on TOP of that!
